Irene Avaalaaqiaq's works are collected by the National Gallery of Canada, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Guelph and the College of William and Mary in Virginia, among many others. In 1999, she received an horourary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Guelph, Ontario, in honour of her many contributions to the development of Inuit art and her prominent role in the Nunavut community of Qamani'tuaq (formerly Baker Lake).
