Charles Maillard was born in Tiaret, Algeria in 1887. He studied art in Paris at the École des Beaux-arts, under Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert Fleury, and at the Académie Julian. In 1910 he came to Canada and settled in Montréal where he studied at the École des Beaux-arts. It was here that he became Director and he served in that capacity until his retirement in 1945. Although he painted throughout his lifetime, his first solo exhibition was not held until he was 84 years old. The exhibition was held at La Maison des arts La Sauvegarde in Montréal.
