F.H. (Frederick Horsman) Varley immigrated to Canada in 1912. He enlisted and became an Official War Artist in the First World War. In the summers of 1948 and 1949, he taught at the Doon School of Fine Arts (located in what is now the Homer Watson House & Gallery) in Kitchener, ON.
